Major Players
During the Civil War, there were many significant people who contributed to both sides. Somehow, these people changed the Civil War’s course into what we now learn about today. They were the major players in the bloodiest war in American history.
Jefferson Davis was the president of the Confederate States of America. He led the South through the war. Davis was democratic, supported slavery, and would do anything to keep it. On the other hand, Republican Abraham Lincoln was the president of the North. Unlike Davis, he hated the idea of slavery. His election caused the South to secede, which then lead to the Civil War. Lincoln was assassinated on April 15th, 1865 by John Wilkes Booth. The lead generals in the war were also major players. General Ulysses S. Grant was the lead general for the Union. He defeated the Confederacy by taking drastic measures, even ordering one of his soldiers to completely destroy the South. Grant later went on the become the president of the United States. Back in South, the lead general for the Confederacy was Robert E. Lee. Lee lost to the Union after putting up a great fight with fewer materials than the North. He had a lot of spirit, but unfortunately had to surrender to Grant at the Appomattox Courthouse on April 9th, 1865.
All of these people were important to the way that the Civil War began and ended. The major players of the war changed the game time and time again. Today, we can study these people and how they have affected our lives.
