Lasting Effects/Lessons Learned
The Civil War took a great toll on our country. Many things changed after the war that some people never expected. Our nation had learned many lessons that we still carry with us today and lasting effects. Nothing in our country would ever be the same again after the Civil War.
One major lasting effect was that the nation was reunited. The South agreed to never secede again, and the Confederate States of America was no more. Another big lasting effect was the 13th Amendment passed on January 31st, 1865 that outlawed slavery. This changed the way the South had to manage their businesses and the way that they treated the African Americans in society. The South had also been destroyed by the North. The former Confederate States of America was in ruins and required major reconstruction.
An important lesson learned from the Civil War was to learn from our mistakes. We could have tried to figure out a reasonable solution, but we let tempers boil over, the North over slavery and the South over the North not respecting their rights. The damage done by the war was incredibly terrible. Without learning from our mistakes, America today could be in a very different place.
The Civil War divided us as a nation. It was a terrible war, but it did remind us of how hard we need to work for peace. Today, we have to do everything we can to prevent something like this from ever happening again.
